The Communist Party of India strongly criticises the dubious role being played by the Governor of Tamil Nadu Mr. Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, in the government formation process. It is clear that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly. In a parliamentary democracy, the question of majority must be tested on the floor of the assembly and not in the halls of Raj Bhavan.
The Governor must discharge his constitutional obligation by immediately inviting the leader of the single largest party to form the government and prove the majority in the Assembly. Any delay, hesitation or selective interpretation of constitutional norms will only reinforce apprehensions of political interference.
The BJP should not be allowed to spread its tentacles in Tamil Nadu through the misuse of the office of the Governor. Constitutional authorities must remain impartial and respect the democratic mandate of the people of Tamil Nadu.
